Welcome to the Holden Paws Dog Grooming Portfolio!
Follow Along as I Learn, Grow, and Improve My Grooming Skills!
This portfolio is a special collection of a few dogs I personally select each week to showcase my progress as I continue my dog grooming education and training.
Rather than featuring every dog I groom, I'll be highlighting a select few who have helped me learn something new, practice different techniques, overcome challenges, or gain valuable hands-on experience.
Not every groom featured here will be perfect, and that's exactly the point! I don't always choose a dog based on how beautiful the finished groom looks. Sometimes I choose a dog because of the challenges we faced, the progress we made, or simply because I was able to help that dog feel more comfortable.
This portfolio is about sharing the real learning experience, including the successes, imperfections, challenges, and lessons along the way.
What You'll Find Here
Each week, I'll share photos and updates featuring some of the wonderful dogs I've had the opportunity to work with, including:
Before-and-after grooming transformations
Different breeds, coat types, and grooming styles
Bathing, blowouts, de-shedding, trimming, and scissoring techniques
Coat care, mat removal, nail care, and other grooming services
My experiences working with different personalities and temperaments
Challenges I've encountered, obstacles I've overcome, and lessons I've learned
New techniques I'm practicing and areas where I continue to improve
Some dogs may have beautiful transformations, while others may have an uneven haircut, a less-than-perfect finish, or a grooming session that needed to be adjusted to accommodate their individual needs.
Every one of these experiences is valuable because learning isn't always about achieving perfection.
Every Dog Teaches Me Something New
One of the most important lessons I'm learning is that no two dogs are alike, and not every dog needs the same grooming approach.
Some dogs love being pampered, while others may be nervous, sensitive, energetic, severely matted, or unfamiliar with the grooming process. Some may have physical limitations, behavioral challenges, or coat conditions that require additional patience, problem-solving, and adjustments to the grooming process.
Learning to recognize these differences, overcome obstacles, adapt my techniques, and meet each dog's individual needs is just as important as learning how to achieve a beautiful haircut.
Sometimes success means creating a beautiful, perfectly blended groom. Other times, success simply means safely removing uncomfortable matting, helping a nervous dog build confidence, or accomplishing what the dog can comfortably tolerate that day.
A dog's comfort, health, and safety will always come before achieving a particular haircut or style.
More Than Just Before & After Photos
This portfolio isn't about presenting every groom as picture-perfect. It's about showing the real journey of becoming a skilled, compassionate, and knowledgeable dog groomer.
I want to share not only what I'm doing well, but also what I'm learning, where I can improve, and how I'm developing the patience, handling skills, and problem-solving abilities needed to work with dogs of all breeds, sizes, coat conditions, and temperaments.
By selecting a few dogs each week, I hope to give you an authentic look at how my training is progressing and how every grooming experience, whether simple or challenging, helps me grow.
Sometimes the most rewarding groom isn't the prettiest one. It's the one where a dog leaves feeling better than when they arrived.
As my education continues, so will this portfolio. Even after completing my formal training, my goal is to never stop learning, improving, and providing the best possible care for every dog entrusted to me.
Thank you for following my journey and supporting Holden Paws Dog Grooming as I turn my love for dogs into a lifelong passion and profession!

Meet Ricky Lake – A Sweet Girl Ready for Her Second Chance!
Ricky Lake arrived at the shelter as a stray with severe matting and in desperate need of some TLC. I had the opportunity to groom this sweet girl, and despite the discomfort caused by removing her tightly matted fur, she showed incredible patience. There were moments when she tried to grab my clippers, particularly while I was working on painful areas, but her reactions appeared to be directed at the clippers rather than me. I believe she was simply trying to stop what was causing her discomfort. Considering the condition of her coat, she did remarkably well throughout the grooming process!
Beneath all that tangled fur was a beautiful, sweet girl just waiting to shine!
Ricky Lake is super smart, already knows “Sit,” and is eager to learn! She's currently underweight, very food-motivated, and working on house-training and polite treat manners. With patience, consistency, and lots of love, she has so much potential to become a wonderful companion.
This precious girl deserves a fresh start with an experienced, understanding family who will give her the patience, security, and love she needs to thrive.
Could you be the one to give Ricky Lake the happy ending she deserves?
